Protection of existing small areas of remnant vegetation will often involve a low level of management. The advantage of protection is that an existing community it will contain a multitude of species and that this biodiversity provides a degree of resilience when more extreme seasons occur. The animal, plant and soil species in remnant areas contain a huge complexity of interactions and a diverse range of biochemical processes which will take decades for us to understand.
Restoration is the re-introduction of plant species which formed part of a former vegetation community. Restoration is often combined with fencing to control grazing, and can play an important role in combating degradation, such as soil erosion.
