Plants that grow in the water

Macro-vegetation grows in the shallow water near the shoreline of Lake Bolac. These plants can be categorised into those that remain submerged, compared to other emergent plants such as reeds.

These plants play an important role in regulating water quality. They take nutrients from the water, and help to reduce turbidity by stopping mud from becoming stirred up. These plants also provide a refuge and breeding sites for fish, insects and birds. All of these functions are important to limiting the likelihood and severity of algal blooms.

Plants on the shoreline

Trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses grow along the shoreline of Lake Bolac. They have a role in providing shade and they also create a windbreak and reduce erosion.
